Repeat after me: reality television isn't real....

The popularity of the "reality TV" genre has always baffled me. Though advertising itself as a look into the lives of ordinary people, the end result is reality in name only. Houston Medical was a perfect example. Though the idea was good- following doctors and patients through their everyday lives- the end result was cheap and contrived. When you put life together with a soundtrack, you invariably end up with a soap opera.

Now that Houston Medical is off the air, there is a local group trying to convince ABC to put the show back on the fall schedule. Save Houston Medical, while well-intentioned, raises one question for me. Why is all this energy being expended over a television show? Aren't there causes out there that would be better served?

To those who are wrapped up in reality television, and in particular Houston Medical, there IS a life out there to be lived and a reality to be experienced: your own. Turn off the TV and go find it.
