If two politicians fall in the forest, and no one is around to hear....

You suck! No, YOU suck worse!!

What if there was a debate and no once cared? OK, a quick show of hands here: did anyone actually watch the debate between Governor Goodhair and the Personification of Evil & Vanity last night? I didn't think so....

Gubernatorial candidates Rick Perry and Tony Sanchez, in their first debate of the campaign, clashed tonight over how to solve the state's homeowners insurance problems.

Democrat Sanchez blamed the Republican governor for the rising insurance rates and company withdrawals from the Texas market that have left hundreds of thousands of people looking for new policies.

"He should have called a special session a long time ago. He knew this problem was there," Sanchez said.

Sanchez accused Perry of favoring the industry because of $1 million in campaign donations from big insurance contributors. The Perry campaign has disputed the amount but offers no figure of its own.

With any luck, they'll beat each other to death....

Perry fired back that as governor, he has called on the Texas Department of Insurance and lawmakers to investigate insurance companies and a state lawsuit against Farmers Insurance Group, which said two weeks ago it was leaving the Texas market.

A special session of the Legislature is unnecessary, Perry said.

Perry said his message to insurers is clear: "If you can't do work in the state of Texas ethically and legally, then you're going to face some of the stiffest fines that you've faced in your life."

Texans should be familiar with seeing Perry and Sanchez on television.

The two have spent a record $72 million so far on the governor's race, much of it fought via slick campaign commercials.

Wednesday's debate was broadcast statewide.

And it probably drew ratings similar to an Oxy-Clean infomercial. Speaking for myself, I'd almost rather watch an hour of Billy Mays emoting than the two jackasses who between them have spent in excess of $72 million dollars. Never has more been spent for less effect.

Thankfully for me, last night I was able to celebrate the opening of hockey season AND watch the Minnesota Twins in the AL Championship Series on our brand-new 51" television. A governor's debate?? Please.... Once Eric figured out that I could watch both games AT THE SAME TIME, well, let's just say that a vacuous and pointless political debate was the farthest thing from my mind. Whose idea was it to have an election during the middle of hockey season, anyway??
