Seabrook, TX (10/27/02)- The Texas governor's race received a jolt today when Jack Cluth, a political unknown, announced his write-in candidacy. Pledging to run a clean, positive campaign, Cluth highlighted the disturbingly negative tone that the campaign has taken.
At press time, little was known about Cluth's platform or proposals, but operatives from both Rick Perry's and Tony Sanchez' campaigns were furiously digging for dirt on the candidate. At present, Cluth has no money, organization, or ideas, but given the current state of the Sanchez-Perry contest, that doesn't seem to be a problem.
A hastily written press release from Cluth campaign headquarters (the bed of his F-150) announced: "Today the people of Texas deserve better than the negative campaigning that has been purchased by the millions wasted by the Sanchez and Perry campaigns. I'm promising the people of Texas peace, order, and five shows a week by Anna Nicole Smith. And if that doesn't work, I'll invade Louisiana."
