If it walks like a bigot, talks like a bigot, and rules from the bench like a bigot...
Focus on the Family, that bastion of reasoned, tolerant political discourse, is all over Morris Dees of the Southern Poverty Law Center for writing a letter opposing Alabama Supreme Court Justice Roy Moore. Well, what they're particularly upset about is Dees' characterization of Moore as a "bigot" and "lone religious nut". Well, if it walks like a duck, and talks like a duck.... Moore hasn't exactly been the poster child for the tolerance of diversity. I would take issue with Dees' description of Moore as a "lone religious nut", though. "Lone" hardly applies here.
Regardless, I do think that Andy's take on this is right on the money:
Of course, Focus on the Family tries to play the game that if you're intolerant of intolerance, then you're intolerant yourself. Technically, that would be true - however, no one is attempting to prevent Judge Moore from having his beliefs; rather, he is being asked to judge with impartiality by the rule of law and to respect the Constitution of the United States - two tasks which are quite obviously beyond his sheltered mind's capabilities.
After all, what is so wrong with expecting Judge Moore to uphold the laws of the State of Alabama and the Constitution of the United States? That is, after all, his sworn duty. And isn't the interpretation of the law supposed to be done without regard to personal prejudices and biases?
