'Nervous' GOP has tough job to master
Texas Republicans finally have what they have long lusted after: complete control of state government. Now what?? They've been the whining opposition for long enough that I'm wondering if they've managed to prepare themselves for being the party driving the bus. I suppose we'll find out soon enough.
AUSTIN -- Poised to assume overwhelming power for the first time in modern Texas history, Republican lawmakers face one major obstacle: lousy timing.
After years of good times and budget surpluses, the now GOP-controlled House, Senate and Governor's Mansion will be forced to tackle multiple major crises, any one of which could cause a backlash.
"It's kind of like the dog chasing the pickup. What happens if the dog catches the pickup?" quipped Sen. Robert Duncan, R-Lubbock. "Does he get run over?"
Indeed. Republicans might just be feeling like a one-legged man in an ass-kicking contest: overmatched and outgunned. Still, they deserve their shot, having won it at the ballot box. It ought to be an interesting process, though. I wonder if Texans realize just how far off the charts some of these Right-Wing Nutcases are. At least now you can't say that you weren't warned.
Remember, you elected them....
