Day 9 on the Campaign Trail

Endorsements: Voter recommendations by the American-Statesman Editorial Board

Gubernatorial candidates make cases one last time

Big spenders often big losers at polls

And this is why I've spent no money on my campaign for Texas Governor. Without bragging on myself, I'd be willing to bet that I'm the first serious candidate for Governor to ever run a campaign without spending a red cent. I'm not sure what that means, but I know that Tony Sanchez has outspent me by close to $60 million- and he's going to lose handily. I figured that if I was going to get thumped, and I likely will, why should I spend any of my own money on a campaign?

You'd think that in a good Liberal town like Austin, a good Liberal like moi could get some love. Sadly, I am left out in the cold this year, outspent and outloved by Tony Sanchez' millions. Ah, well, I figured that I was in trouble when Scott Chaffin broke the news that Tony Sanchez and Rick Perry had both been seen at a Del Rio strip club- and no media outlet even gave the story a sniff. Despite the best efforts of my friends and supporters, we've not been able to smear either of the major candidates. Since I have no advertising budget...well, hell, why be bitter? I'm going to get my ass kicked tomorrow, but as I long as I can hit double-digits, I'll be a happy boy. Besides, 2006 isn't that far away....
