Can we fire Jerry, too??

Cowboys dismiss Campo: Parcells top pick to take over team

As much as I hate the Cowboys, I find myself taking pity on their fans. Frankly, they deserve better than the tribute to mediocrity they're being force-fed now. The problem is not Dave Campo; the problem is the owner. Until the team has a new owner or the current wakes up and realizes what he is doing to this once-proud franchise, the Cowboys are doomed to be a .500 team at best.

Successful businessmen who own sports franchises are generally successful in sports because they know their limitations. They realize that the reason they had enough money to buy a team in the first place was their business acumen. They are also smart enough to realize where their expertise ends. The key is to surround yourself with people who know what it takes to be successful in that milieu and then get out of there way and let them do it. Bob McNair in Houston is a perfect example. An outstanding businessman, he is smart enough to know that his expertise doesn't extend onto the football field. Recognizing his limitations, he has hired a first-class team of football people. The Texans will likely be a winning franchise sooner rather than later because of this. McNair stays in the owner's bos, but you can bet the people on the field and in the coach's box are still held accountable by him.

Jerry Jones doesn't seem to quite understand the distinction between being a successful business man and being a General Manager. Yes, the Cowboys are his team, and he is free to do with them as he wishes. Still, the sooner he recognizes his shortcomings as a football guy and turns the reins over to professionals, the sooner the Cowboys will find themselves on their way back.

Of course, given Jones' ego, don't expect this epiphany to occur anytime soon. If you're a Cowboys fan, well...my condolences.
