Hey, I think we hit a sore spot!

Yesterday's post on the SUV controversy (or lack of same) did yield some interesting jousting. One commenter referenced this article: "...or Not To Buy". It's an interesting argument for why purchasing an SUV is an unwise decision. The article does make some good points, but let's be realistic here. If you have an agenda, you can argue your point convincingly, which the author of this article certainly does. ANY automobile of whatever flavor is a rolling contradiction when it comes to issues of safety, reliability, environmental friendliness, or whatever else you may be using as measuring stick. How a vehicle stacks up depends on which side of the fence you happen to occupy and which measuring stick you choose to use.

This issue seems to me to fall under the same rubric as politics or religion. There is no broad, abstract "RIGHT" or "WRONG" answer. We can argue this until the cows come home, but to what end? There are pros and cons to whatever type of vehicle one happens to be partial to, and no amount of persuasion, leafletting, or legislation will change a thing. Those of you afraid of SUVs will continue to be afraid; those of us partial to trucks and SUVs will continue feeling that bigger is better. I've driven a Geo Metro, and now I drive a Ford F150. From where I sit, I'll take my truck any day of the week. 'Nuff said, y'all....
