Sweet Dreams are Made of This

Well, Jack didn't update this morning. Which made me sad. And then a voice said, "John, you have the power to change that!" And so I do, and so I am. Jack's gathered several guest authors (so I'm told) and invited them to post from time to time, too. I think I'm the first to do so.

What I was reading this morning (instead of Jack) was the news that the rest of the world is opposed to our North Korea policy called "structured containment." The North Koreans like this idea because it has the word "structure" in it. There have been no structures in North Korea for some time now.

If you've missed it, the Bush administration has decided that the best way to deal with the military threat of North Korea is economic sanctions. The world community responded by goggling at Bush as though he had suggested mass evictions of homeless people. But Mr. Bush's logic on this matter is sound.

After all, it worked perfectly in Afghanistan and Cuba. And, as Mr. Bush is constantly reminding us, the economic sanctions against Iraq are what kept us from having to invade the country to end Sodamn's weapons program. That's right: economic sanctions work. The threat of starving the neediest and poorest members of a country always works. Especially when applied against evil dictators who rob from and slaughter their own citizens.

So, to those nay-sayers on the Bush policy, all I'm saying is "give mass starvation a chance." Economic sanctions will, at the very least, cause the North Koreans to rise up, burnish and sharpen their empty five-pound rice sacks, and overthrow the heavily armed nuclear-capable personal bodyguard of Kim Jong Il. And then the populace will become instantly literate, have free and open elections, start shopping at Neiman Marcus and the Sharper Image, and dance forever among butterflies and rainbows thanks to democracy and the power of the unfettered capitalistic marketplace. That's what happened in Iraq! That's the power of American Foreign Policy.

Why the rest of the world will not bow to our wisdom, I simply do not know.
