Parcells to become Cowboys coach today
For you Dallas Cowboys fans, I hope this will be the answer. I still won't be rooting for the Cowboys, but there is hope for y'all- finally.
The Dallas Cowboys are hoping Bill Parcells can do for them what he did for the New York Giants, New England Patriots and New York Jets.
Parcells is 3-for-3 when it comes to turning around franchises, and today he will be named the head coach of the Cowboys, who are coming off their third consecutive 5-11 season.
Parcells confirmed the news to ESPN, which employs him as a studio analyst.
"I'm going to do it," Parcells said, according to ESPN.com.
An unidentified Cowboys official told the New York Times that Parcells was given assurances of autonomy over selecting the team's assistant coaches, its scouting and its personnel departments, and drafts.
Jerry Jones, the owner of the Cowboys, remains the team's general manager but will defer to Parcells' decisions in those areas, the official said. That's more authority than Jones has given to anyone since Jimmy Johnson, the first coach he hired after buying the Cowboys in 1989.
"Jerry has invested a lot in the Cowboys, and the thing that drives him more than anything else is his desire to win," Parcells said. "That's the biggest common (denominator) we both have."
If memory serves, Jimmy and Jerry said all the right things in the beginning. Off course, what hadn't been decided was who got to take credit for the team's success. IS Dallas big enough for two XXL egos? Or will this "marriage made in football heaven" be destined to travel down the same road that Jimmy and Jerry did? If nothing else, it should be interesting....
