Single Mother Barred from Teaching Religion
Disclaimer: This post is in no way intended as a condemnation of Catholics or Catholicism, nor should it be interpreted as such. It CAN, however, and probably SHOULD be interpreted as a condemnation of the stupid and mean-spirited men who run the Catholic Church. It makes the Religion of Peace seem almost inviting by comparison.
So why not just make this poor woman wear a scarlet "A" on her chest (or a "U" for unwed)?? Is the heirarchy of the Catholic Church so ignorant, so venal, so narrow-minded that they cannot see the good in this woman? Apparently so....
ROME (Reuters) - Schools have the right to bar single mothers from teaching religion, the highest court in Roman Catholic Italy said Wednesday.
It ruled that a Florence school was entitled to block a young woman from teaching religious studies because she had fallen pregnant out of wedlock."Teaching religion... has to conform to the doctrine of the Church, so the suitability of the teachers has to be recognized by the ecclesiastical authorities," the court ruling said.
Italy is a predominantly Roman Catholic country and the Church still exerts great authority over many aspects of life.
And the Church's authority is also apparently above common sense or human decency. How anyone can equate Christian charity with the narrow-minded, judgemental ignorance of the Catholic Church's hierarchy is beyond me.
