Welcome to a world where employees are still property

British workers fight for toilet rights

At first blush, my reaction is to turn this into a joke. Lord knows there is much to ridicule here, but there is an uglier truth at work here. There are still trolls in this world who treat their employees as property, units of production useful only when they are producing.

British union chiefs launched a campaign on Friday to flush out employers who dock their workers' pay when they take a bathroom break.

The Trades Union Congress (TUC) "Gotta Go" campaign is targeting a legal loophole that says bosses must provide lavatories for staff, but aren't bound to let them go when they need to.

"It's incredible to think that in the 21st century workers are still being penalized for going to the loo," TUC spokesman Brendan Barber said in a statement.

"Employers clinging to Dickensian bathroom break policies should understand that if they trusted and respected their staff, they would end up with a healthier, better motivated, more productive workforce," he said.

The TUC, a national trades union body, said it wants workers to have the right to go on paid time, without any loss of wages.

It said it will name and shame employers who fail to provide adequate and clean toilet facilities.

What is it that allows an employer to control an employee's bodily functions? If you want machines, why not build them yourself? I understand an employer's need to control costs and eliminate waste (no pun intended) wherever possible, but at the cost of someone's humanity?

For these employers, I wish only that when you go to the Hell that you so richly deserve, it will be a pay toilet- and you'll be out of quarters....
