It's such a relief sometimes when someone on the opposite end of the ideological spectrum comes to the same conclusion as you. In this case, it's Owen, who, in a moment rarer than all nine planets being in perfect alignment, says something I can wholeheartedly get behind.
What Buchanan needs to realize is that: 1) the US can't detach itself from the world and maintain its state of well-being, 2) some people hate the US more for what we are than what we do, and 3) Israel is a democratic state surrounded by nations led by autocratic barbarians, and that's something worth protecting. Until he admits these three things, we have no common ground to start from.
It's not very often you'll see me getting behind a "slash-and-burn, kill-'em-all, let-God-sort-'em-out" Conservative, but Israel IS an island of democracy (albeit a contentious one) in a sea of autocratic despots, and as such is well worth protecting. That's what friends do. Any questions??
BTW, is it just me, or is Pat Buchanan turning into a grouchy, objectionable xenophobe? The self-styled High Priest of Fortress America is becoming progressively more strident as he gets older. It's a tired, worn act.
