Critics of War Tend to Be Critics of Coverage
No surprise here, I suppose. Howard Kurtz tells us why anti-war folks tend to be the ones thinking that coverage of the war has gone overboard.
This war has almost literally taken place in our living rooms. It is both an awe-inspiring and profoundly disturbing phenomenon to be able to watch a firefight as it happens half a world away. Is it necessary for us to be able to do this? Perhaps not, but it certainly does make for compelling television- or it will until the first embedded news crew is killed while broadcasting live. It will happen; perhaps not in this war or the next, but at some point a reporter will be take a round and die on the air while he is chatting with an in-studio host. I'd like to see how well Paula Zahn handles THAT one....
