Boys just want to have fun

Price 'too drunk' to remember what happened in Pensacola hotel

Talk about going off the deep end. Mike Price was a well-respected family man in his late fifties. Of course that doesn't explain his hanging up at a strip club in Pensacola, getting blind drunk, and waking up in his hotel room with two women- neither of whom were his wife. Self-destruction seems a horribly inadequate description of Price's hijinks.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Former Alabama football coach Mike Price calls a Sports Illustrated story that reports he had sex with two women in his Pensacola, Fla., hotel room the night of April 16 "an absolute lie."

In an interview with The Birmingham (Ala.) News, published Wednesday, Price also denies he bought drinks for and propositioned college students in Tuscaloosa, Ala., several months ago, as the story reports.

"We stand by the reporting and the story," says Sports Illustrated spokesman Rick McCabe.

Price, however, says he was "too drunk to really know" what happened at a topless bar in Pensacola earlier on the April night that that led to his firing. He says he passed out in the early hours of the morning in his room and later awakened, fully clothed, to find a woman there. But he doesn't remember any women there the night before.

Perhaps the classiest act in this whole sordid saga is Price's wife, who has been silent throughout. Can any of us imagine what it must be like to walk in her shoes? I'm not sure I'd want to. Of course, I'm not sure I'd want to be in Mike Price's shoes, having to deal with the wrath of his wife. Considering what he has put her through, it's the least he deserves.
