What did Annika prove? Depends on your perspective
You can find in Annika Sorenstam's Colonial adventure what you will. Be it a victory for equal rights, or a betrayal of the game of golf, or any anything in between- it may be all of those things. The reality, though, may be so much simpler and far less politically complex.
What if Bank of America, who sponsors the Colonial tournament, simply saw a way to drum up some excitement and publicity for what is normally a rather mundane week in Ft. Worth? Can you blame them for wanting to use one of their sponsor's exemptions to try to attract some attention? Personally, I think it was a stroke of genius. Sure, it wasn't the grand competitive success that many had hoped for, but shooting 71-74 at Colonial is nothing to be ashamed of. Whether or not Annika advanced the cause of women's rights or set it back is a question better left for those willing to grind that ax. I think it was a good thing, all in all. The Colonial attracted a raftload of publicity it never would have otherwise received, Annika got her test, and a lot of people who normally could care less about golf paid attention to the game. How can that be a bad thing?
