This week's sign that the Apocalypse is upon us

Sources: LeBron, Nike agree to seven-year deal

Source: James got $1M signing bonus from Upper Deck

Yes, LeBron James is a fabulously talented young man- albeit one who has never played a game above the high school level. The 18-year-old James hasn't even been drafted yet, and he is already set for life financially. I wonder what we've come to when companies are throwing unimaginable wealth at a wet-behind-the-ears kid who has yet to lace up a pair of sneakers in anger. Whatever happened to having to prove yourself first?

I suppose that this would underscore why I'm becoming progressively more disillusioned with professional sports. How am I supposed to relate to anyone- especially an 18-year-old- who makes more simply by signing a contract than I will likely ever see in my lifetime?

Ah, well, there's still the old lottery ticket strategy....
