Houston Aeros win Calder Cup 2003 championship
Bulldogs blanked in Calder Cup finale
It was the last, final, and ultimate game of the hockey season (and NO ONE is more relieved than Susan). OK, so it wasn't the Stanley Cup, and few people south of the US-Canada border (never mind the Greater Houston area) likely cared, but Houston has it's very own championship hockey team this morning. The Aeros (primary minor league affiliate for the Minnesota Wild) defeated the Hamilton Bulldogs (shared minor league affiliate for the Edmonton Oilers and the Montreal Canadiens) 3-0 in Game 7 of the AHL's Calder Cup finals. Being that the AHL is a minor league, the game lacked the speed and finesse that you'd find in the NHL, but it certainly didn't lack for excitement and outstanding goaltending.
Of course, this being southeast Texas, the likelihood of any excitement being generated is slim at best. Still, for those of us who moved here from the Great White North, a championship is no small thing. Before long, I'll have my championship hat and T-shirt, and I'll be counting the days until next season, which is only 4 1/2 months away.
OK...NOW summer can begin....
