Man Jailed for Airport Explosion
This maroon should be thankful that stupidity isn't a criminal offense- although in his case, I'd be willing to make an exception. And why only 18 months?
AMMAN (Reuters) - A Japanese journalist was jailed Sunday for 18 months for blowing up a Jordanian airport security guard as he tried to show that a souvenir cluster bomblet from the Iraq (news - web sites) war was harmless.
The state security court sentenced Hiroke Gomi, 36, a photographer for Japan's Mainichi daily, to a reduced 18 months sentence after dropping charges of possession of explosives -- an offence punishable by up to 15 years.Gomi was convicted on a lesser count of causing unintentional death and inflicting bodily harm in the blast at Amman's international airport on May 1 that killed Sergeant Ali Sarhan and wounded four others.
Chief judge Colonel Fawaz al-Baqour said Gomi had behaved recklessly in seeking to prove to the security guards that the bomblet was safe before handing it over.
"Instead of acting in a proper way to hand the bomb immediately to security without tampering with it, he began to toy with it to persuade them it was disused without taking the least precautions," he said.
"Although the court realizes he possessed explosives, it was clear he was not aware he was carrying any live explosives," he said.
So, what sort of dumbass picks up a cluster bomb and puts it in his carryon bag? Lesson number one when in a war zone is NEVER PICK UP STUFF OFF THE GROUND, because you never know what might go boom. I can't tell you how many times, after living and working in three different war zones, how many times I've had to stop people from picking up souvenirs that, upon closer inspection, turned out to be explosives. It's just too bad that this maroon blew up an innocent security guard and not himself. Why are the idiots always the ones who survive?
