Another DUMASS AWARD wiener

Robber serves punch to juror (thanks to Chris Schroen!!)

DUMASS AWARD WIENER #8: Octavia Williams

Well, you've just been convicted of robbery, but, since you're a first-time loser, you're probably not looking at any jail time. So, what's a girl to do? How about ENSURING that you'll end up behind bars by attacking one of the jurors? Do they come any dumber than this??

Geraldine Goldring, 53, walked out of the Criminal Courts building on Tuesday afternoon when she suddenly ran into defendant Octavia Williams, 44.

"So I'm guilty, bitch?" Williams screamed at Goldring - and slugged her in the face.

The attack happened about 10 minutes after Goldring and the other jurors found Williams guilty of stealing $160 in cash from a woman's purse in Times Square last December.

Because it was her first conviction, Supreme Court Justice Charles Tejada told Williams she probably would get probation instead of prison time at her sentencing.

But Williams blew it when she walloped Goldring - and now she's looking at up to four years behind bars.

After Goldring alerted Court Officer Tommy Lyons, he and fellow officers chased down the rampaging robber a few blocks away in Foley Square, witnesses said. Even after she was arrested, she tried to run away and struggled to slip the handcuffs, officials said.

Then she was hauled back to Tejada's courtroom, and he ordered her jailed until her sentencing on Aug. 12.

"Excuse me, your honor. I'm staying in jail now?" the incredulous defendant asked.

"Absolutely! Absolutely you're staying in jail," he replied.

"Why?" she asked.

"Don't be surprised if you get a sentence that sends you to jail, all right?" the judge answered. "And the only one you have to blame is yourself, Ms. Williams. There are consequences when you do things."

I realize that this may be a tough concept for some of my behaviorally-challenged readers to grasp, but sometimes actions really DO have consequences. Congratulations, Ms. Williams, for demonstrating that the American judicial system is not in complete disarray. For going above and beyond the call of duty and anything resembling common sense, you have truly proven yourself worthy of your DUMASS AWARD. Wear your crown of thorns with pride!! And be careful not to drag your knuckles....
