Fear and ignorance on parade

Fear and Loathing in the Mother Ship (via South Knox Bubba)

Their single organizing philosophy is an irrational, all-encompassing, broiling hatred of George W. Bush. They hate him for a million reasons. But most of all, Democrats hate the president because on every political issue of significance since he came into office, he has beaten them like rented mules. Just look at their presidential candidates: it's like they're lost in a time warp. They want to tax like Mondale and spend like Carter.

- Tom DeLay

It is difficult to adequately describe the utter disdain with which I regard Tom DeLay. Perhaps if the man were an effective legislator, it might be a different story. The reality, though, is that the only thing that Tom DeLay cares about is his own self-aggrandizement. The only language Delay understands is power. The fact that he was elected by his constituents to represent their interest must seem likely a quaintly naive concept to him.

DeLay is a man incapable of treating politics as (in Tip O'Neill's words) "the art of the possible". To DeLay, politics is a zero-sum game, where the winners lay waste to the opinions, ideas, and sensibilities of the minority. Consensus is not a word you'll find in his vocabulary.

While everyone else got the memo that big-government, blame-America-first liberalism died with disco, the Howard Dean Democrats still want to party like it's 1979!

Maybe we should thank the Democrats for shedding their moderate clothing to reveal their true Swinging-Seventies selves.

But frankly, America doesn't need a president in a hot-pink leisure suit.

And, frankly, we don't need a majority leader who is a miserable excuse for a human being and a complete asshole. Of course, DeLay hardly seems to consider those qualities as hindrances to the continued growth of his empire. The worst part of this is that he only has to answer to his constituents every two years (and, sadly, I am one). Apparently, the voters of his district are perfectly happy with someone for whom the word "compromise" is a four-letter word. Politics need not be a showcase for corruption, venality, and mean-spiritedness- unless of course you're Tom DeLay, in which case you revel in the qualities.
