Random musings on a rainy Sunday morning

Yep...it's a great day to be a duck....

  • All in all, this has the makings of a pretty crummy weekend weather-wise. Officials on Galveston Island have called for a voluntary evacuation of the west end of the island, which is standard for this sort of situation. This is ironic, because we're planning to visit some relatives who have a beach house on the west end of the island.

According to the Harris Country Office of Emergency Management: Seabrook has had 5.63 inches of rain over the past 24 hours. A mile or so down the road in Taylor Lake Village, they've had 6.89 inches. TS Grace is supposed to make landfall this afternoon near Matagorda, about 3 hours southeast of Seabrook. I'm beginning to question the wisdom of a trip to Galveston. The forecast calls for an additional 6-12 inches of rain....

  • This weekend is also the annual Seabrook Music Festival. With Susan being ill, we hadn't planned on going, and even if we did have plans, the weather would certainly have altered them. The folks who put on the festival put in a lot of hard work, only to be tortured almost every year with miserable weather.
  • Southern Illinois University, like everyone else, is taking a long weekend, so Adam decided to go to Chicago with his roommate, who's from the Chicago area. Adam called me yesterday morning and asked, "Guess where I'm going to be in about three hours? Wrigley Field to see a Cubs game!" Of course, he knows that one of my dreams is to do what he was about to, and he couldn't resist rubbing it in.

Later he called to tell me "I've been to Wrigley Field and you haven't!!" Yeah, I love the kid, but sometimes I just want to slap him.... :0)

I grew up a Twins and a Cubs fan. In fact, the first baseball card I remember having was Cubs 3B Ron Santo. I've always joked that I won't die until the Twins and Cubs meet in the World Series. This means I'm going to live to be about 206.....

  • Houston beat Rice 48-14. Well, at least Rice has baseball season to look forward to....

My alma mater doesn't open their season until next Saturday with a road game at mighty Beloit College. I remember Beloit...I got stoned there the night before a soccer game. Let me tell you, there are few things more disorienting than standing in goal with a buzz on while players are trying to kick a soccer ball past you. Fortunately, I only gave up one goal and we came away with a tie.

  • One of the fringe benefits of having an extremely ill family member is that everyone wants to feed you. No one in our house is in any danger of losing weight these days. Between the lasagna and the salads and the bread and the cookies...man, being sick does have some advantages. Susan's ex-husband sent a complete frozen dinner (pork ribs, pulled pork, baked beans, pecan pie) from Corky's BBQ in Memphis, TN. To barbeque aficionados such as Eric, Corky's is apparently the pinnacle of the art form. To unitiated swine such as myself, it was still damn good. I've never been a fan of barbeque, probably because Corky's is far superior to ANYTHING I've had in Texas. My waistline thanks you, David!!
