Bush shifts style in re-election bid: Still folksy, but more disciplined
President much less apt to stray from speech

So who is running for re-election now? Ronald Reagan Lite?? No one will likely ever accuse this President of overthinking....

Since taking office, Bush has largely traded in the malapropisms typified by his campaign claim -- "we want to put food on your family" -- for a more disciplined public speaking style.

The president's first term in office has seen numerous changes to his personal style, from the addition of a bright aqua dress shirt in his wardrobe, to a less jokey demeanor in official settings.

At the same time, some things about Bush's outward persona have remained steady. The casual folksiness when he entertains at the ranch, his lack of interest in Washington nightlife and a tendency to garble spontaneous remarks all are consistent trademarks.

With Bush heading into campaign mode, new revisions may be in the works, as he shifts from governing to selling himself in his bid for re-election.

As a rule, Bush does not like to be queried about anything personal. It's a line of inquiry he calls "goo-goo" questions.

"I'm also not very analytical," Bush said in a recent exchange with reporters aboard Air Force One. "You know I don't spend a lot of time thinking about myself, about why I do things."

Given the scope of responsibilities faced by a sitting President, a lack of introspection would seem to be something of a liability, no? Surely I'm not the only frightened by the thought of so little candlepower being utilized by our Chief Executive's thought processes??
