Your Higher Education tax dollars at work?

Media guide proves everything's big in Texas (via Ben Maller)

What weighs five pounds and can double as exercise equipment? If you guessed UT's football media guide, you may go to the head of the class....

Checking in at a hefty 5 pounds, the 2003 University of Texas football media guide is the undisputed king among Division I-A schools.

"Instead of weights, you could lift it to get in shape," Texas women's athletic director Chris Plonsky said.

With 591 pages, it's packed with information, such as player biographies, history and statistics.

Did you know R.D. Wentworth was the Longhorns' first coach in 1894? He was paid $325 plus expenses that season, in which his team went 6-1.

Some other information isn't as consumable, such as 91 pages of pictures detailing everything from coach Mack Brown's family to the Texas Angels, a group of undergraduates who aid in the recruiting process.

Did you know Austin is one of Jay Leno's favorite cities? He says so. It's all in the book.

Everyone knows football is king in Texas, but all this for a program whose last national championship team was in 1970?

Indeed. What I want to know is where the money comes from to print this monstrosity? Please tell me that our tax dollars aren't going to produce this monument to gridiron excess??
