Macalester Drops Home-Opener to Lewis & Clark 49-20
My alma mater, Division III Macalester College, lost their home opener yesterday 49-20 to Portland's Lewis & Clark College. It's just too bad for Macalester that there is no such thing as Division IV.
Lewis & Clark (1-0) scored five second half touchdowns to pull away for a 49-20 win over Macalester in St. Paul.
Nick Kaiel ran for 174 yards and a score on just 10 carries and teammate Ryan Bogle added 132 yards and three touchdowns on the ground to lead a strong Pioneer running attack.
Macalester had a nice game on the offensive side of the ball as well, piling up 24 first downs and 383 total yards, and getting a school-record-tying 13 pass receptions from David Kruger. A running back who also rushed for 48 yards on nine carries, Kruger came out of the backfield for 150 yards in receiving yardage while tying David Schumacher (2000) for the most catches in a game. Kruger also threw a touchdown pass and returned six kickoffs for 122 yards (20.0 ypr.)
Quarterback Adam Denny went 24-for-44 for 251 yards. He passed for one touchdown, ran for another and added a touchdown reception from Kruger on a fourth-quarter trick play. Matt Munson ran for 75 yards on 17 carries.
The Scots pulled to within a score at 20-14 midway through the third quarter on a 1-yard Denny run, but L & C tallied three straight touchdowns to go up 42-14 early in the fourth.
The good news is that the season is still young, so there is still hope and room for improvement. Of course, the bad news is that season is still young, and things could get ugly. Quickly.
