U.S. intelligence: N. Korea using Internet to indoctrinate the masses

Anyone who has ever had too much time on their hands and decided to read the Korean Central News Agency web site knows what funny folks those North Koreans can be. Now they're taking their "all propaganda, all the time" philosophy to the Internet>

According to a U.S. intelligence report, Pyongyang installed a nationwide fiber-optic cable network in 2000 and began a nationwide intranet known as Kwangmyong 2000 that year.

In September 2001, the North Koreans connected to the Internet in Shenyang, China, for the first time permitting email to be sent to the country.

"Indeed, Pyongyang is using [information technology] to indoctrinate the public and put its propaganda before foreign audiences," the report states. "In addition to studying the party line through regular group reading of [government-run] Nodong Sinmun in hard copy, a practice for indoctrinating members of work units throughout North Korea, the installation of computer networks now brings the newspaper to some workplaces on line."

North Korea also has put its propaganda on the Internet through outlets such as the official Korean Central News Agency web site and an Internet site run by North Korean residents in Japan. Pyongyang also has placed two official newspapers, the Minju Choson and Nodong Sinmun, on websites that originate in China.

Yep, they may not be able to feed their people, but they sure know how to brainwash a populace. If only they could figure out how to stop spending so much money on their massive military and devote some of those resourcs to feeding their subjects. Then again, forcing millions of starving peasants to think and march in lockstep is SO much more fun.
