When, exactly, did God become a Republican?

Pat Robertson: God told him it's Bush in a "blowout"

Well, then...how 'bout we just call the whole thing off and save ourselves a whole lot of time, column inches, and money? I may be a Democrat, but who am I to question Divine Providence?

NORFOLK, Va. -- Pat Robertson said Friday that God told him President Bush will be re-elected in a landslide.

"I think George Bush is going to win in a walk," the religious broadcaster said on his "700 Club" program on the Virginia Beach-based Christian Broadcasting Network, which he founded.

"I really believe I'm hearing from the Lord it's going to be like a blowout election in 2004. It's shaping up that way," Robertson said.

"The Lord has just blessed him," Robertson said of Bush. "I mean, he could make terrible mistakes and comes out of it. It doesn't make any difference what he does, good or bad, God picks him up because he's a man of prayer and God's blessing him."....

The Rev. Barry W. Lynn, a frequent Robertson critic and executive director of Americans United for Separation of Church and State, said he had a prediction of his own.

"I predict that Pat Robertson in 2004 will continue to use his multimillion broadcasting empire to promote George Bush and other Republican candidates," Lynn said in a statement. "Maybe Pat got a message from (Bush political adviser) Karl Rove and thought it was from God."

Indeed. Don't y'all think God might just have a few other things on his mind (war, famine, pestilence)? I wasn't aware that God was even in the business of making his political affiliations known. No, if Robertson is hearing the voice of God, it's likely because he keeps forgetting to take his medication.

Robertson is (once again) merely using his position and his self-perceived piety to push his own personal political agenda (and to garner some face time). Sadly, the slavering, unquestioning multitudes that tune into his "700 Club" will probably swallow Robertson's propaganda hook, line, and sinker. Indeed, the only thing more dangerous than self-righteous piety is unthinking and uncritical self-righteous piety- of which Robertson's followers seem to have an overabundance.

I hate to bust up your holy reverie here, y'all, but God is NOT a Republican. Of course, he's not a Democrat, either, though I would dearly love to claim the support of the Divine. All Robertson is accomplishing here is the cheapening of both politics AND religion. Those of you who feel that God's supposed GOP political leanings are both self-evident and without question ought to consider removing your anteriors from your posteriors.

Betty Bowers would be proud....
