And the narrow-minded shall always be among us

On Thursday, I rambled on at length about some trolls in Central Texas who see nothing nothing wrong with politicizing the sale of Girl Scout cookies. At the time, it seemed that people were recognizing the ridiculousness and pettiness of it all, and that they'd let their daughters get back to selling cookies. Good Lord, was I ever naive. Just when I'd begun to think I might need to give people credit for having at least some grip on reality, I find out how wrong I really was.

Now, some mothers have apparently decided that it's more important to deny their daughters the opportunity to broaden their horizons. I'm not sure what these folks think they are teaching their daughters (other than critical, independent thought is bad), but they have succeeded in portraying themselves as the narrow-minded know-nothings that they may in fact be.

No, I don't begrudge these folks their beliefs. What upsets me is the misguided knee-jerk reaction that has led to their denying their daughters the opportunity to enjoy what should be a perfectly innocent childhood learning experience.

CRAWFORD -- Brownie Troop 7087 is no more, and another Girl Scout troop has only two members left after the other girls were yanked out by their parents.

A Christian radio station in nearby Waco aired ads for two weeks urging folks to boycott Girl Scout cookies.

Dozens of people in this deeply conservative Central Texas area have been protesting what they call a "cozy relationship" between the Girl Scouts and Planned Parenthood, which provides various health services, including abortions.

"It's not that we're a bunch of activists. We're just a bunch of moms who care about their kids," said Lisa Aguilar, who took her 10-year-old daughter out of a Crawford troop. "For us, it's the morality. Where is Girl Scouts going?"

First of all, I'd be interested in what these folks define as a "cozy relationship". Secondly, do they not realize (or do they just happily ignore the incovenient reality) that Planned Parenthood offers a wide range of female reproductive health services? Would y'all be happier if we just went back to bleeding everyone with leeches?

Come on, people...WAKE UP AND SMELL THE CAT LITTER! While I respect your right to believe as you see fit, I also believe it is incumbent upon you to recognize that not every one shares your narrow view of "morality". If you apply the same logic that you are using to boycott the Girl Scouts, then you should also be boycotting the National Football League. After, do you have ANY idea of how much money is bet on professional football? Surely, wagering is also an immoral act, eh? Let's not be hypocritical....

No, I don't expect people to feel as I do, but is it too much to asks that we stop polticizing the activities of little girls? Do we really have to be THAT small-minded? If you live in Central Texas, the answer is, sadly, yes.
