Another DUMB@$$ AWARD wiener

Is there no end to what some people will politicize?

Girl Scout cookie boycott urged: Anti-abortion group says Scouts support Planned Parenthood

DUMB@$$ AWARD wiener #69: John Pisciotta

This foisted an adult conversation on a bunch of little innocent girls. It's making them think of things they shouldn't have to worry about.

- Pat Stone, education director of Planned Parenthood of Central Texas

You (Pro-Life Waco) just made buying Girl Scout cookies a political statement, and it's one I am not afraid to make. Thanks for the reminder that we need to support this worthy organization.

- M.B. Tankersley

I understand the importance of religion as much as the next person, but there are times when the Right Wing Religious Wackjobs in this state really get my goat. Chuck Kuffner relays a sorry tale of how something as innocent as Girl Scout cookies can be politicized. Apparently, some Wingnut has determined that Girl Scout cookies support abortion, and as such Girl Scout Cookies are the agent of Satan. Right; and a portion of the proceeds from each bag of Peanut M&M's went to Saddam's WMD Fund....

People in Waco were more than a bit taken aback after turning on a Christian radio station and hearing a community leader call for a boycott of Thin Mints and Caramel deLites.

"I encourage you to join me in abstaining from Girl Scout cookies," John Pisciotta, director of Pro-Life Waco and an associate professor of economics at Baylor University, has been saying for two weeks in public-service announcements running around the clock on KBDE/89.9.

Pisciotta then says the Waco-based Bluebonnet Council of Girl Scouts supports Planned Parenthood's annual sex education seminars.

The vaguely worded radio announcements are the latest and most public attempt by the group to discourage the Girl Scouts from even a casual affiliation with Planned Parenthood, an international organization that promotes reproductive freedom and provides health care services related to reproduction.

So what, exactly, is the lesson we are teaching our children here? That nothing is sacred (no pun intended, of course) if you are doing the anointed work of the Almighty- or at least what you perceive to be that work. No tactic, no matter how small-minded or mean-spirited is out of bounds if it helps you to achieve your ultimate goal- which in this case seems to be teaching Girl Scouts not to piss off Fundamentalists.

If you oppose abortion, that is your perogative and your choice in this free country of ours. Don't attempt to foist your small-mindedness off on a group of Girl Scouts that are simply trying to raise money to fund their activities. There are certainly more effective ways available to make your point without looking like the joyless Grinches that many pro-Choice types suspect you to be.

Congratulations to John Pisciotta, our latest DUMB@$$. It's people like Pisciotta who managed to give Christians a bad name, which, in all honesty, they really do not deserve. I know many Christians who are decent, caring, and sensitive folks (hell, I'm married to one), and who also have a strong enough grip on reality to understand that the world is NOT entitled to their opinions and beliefs. Of course, this lack of perspective and the seemingly tenuous grip on reality make Mr. Pisciotta the perfect DUMB@$$.
