Trolls come in all shapes and sizes

Ann Coulter Smears a War Hero

Debating her on her "ideas" does about as much good as kicking a retarded puppy.

- Charles Taylor

I suppose we should hardly be shocked. After all, trolls don't always come in ugly packages. Ann Coulter seems perfectly OK with the idea that anyone who disagrees with her is worthy of whatver scorn she can heap upon them- whether real or imagined, true or not. THIS is the Republican alternative?

Her current target is Max Cleland, the former United States Senator who left three limbs in Vietnam. The courageous Mr. Cleland prevailed over his terrible injury, and the depression that followed; he was appointed Secretary of Veterans Affairs in the Clinton administration and then elected to the Senate from his home state of Georgia.

But Ms. Coulter considers him deserving of scorn and denigration—and lies about his service, despite his sacrifice—for one reason alone: Mr. Cleland is a Democrat who dares to speak out against the President. There was a time when Republicans were the first to defend veterans and the last to attack anyone who had served, regardless of partisan affiliation. That tradition is dead, however, in part because so many of the party’s extremist leaders, who talk loudly about war, managed to avoid military service when their time came.

There are too many partisan Republicans who are willing to do whatever it takes to re-elect George W. Bush, even if it involves lies, dishonesty, and outright slander and character assassination. Liberals are not guiltless, certainly, but we have hardly stooped to the depths that Conservative Republicans have no qualms over plumbing. There is a rumor floating around the internet that George W. Bush paid for a young woman's abortion Way Back When. Frankly, such a rumor is beneath contempt, and more importantly, it has nothing to do with George W. Bush' fitness to be President. Ergo, you will never again see it mentioned here again. If the rumor involved a Democrat, Ann Coulter would be beating it until it was a lifeless, amorphous mass. Shame? It's certainly not in her vocabulary.

Gee, eight months of rumors, half-truths, and outright lies from Republicans and their attack dogs. I can hardly wait....
