Remember, purple IS the color of royalty

ESPN will join Favre at Reliant: Texans, Packers to meet Nov. 21

Approximately six months from now, I'll be sitting in the stands at Reliant Stadium cheering on my Minnesota Vikings as they play the Houston Texans. I haven't been to an NFL game since my father took me to see the LA Rams whack the Vikings 31-3 in December, 1968 at old Metropolitan Stadium. I was eight years old, and all I remember is freezing my @$$ off in the stands. I was too frozen to appreciate the experience, nor did I realize that it would be almost 36 years before I would have another opportunity to see an NFL game in person.

Once Houston was awarded an NFL team, I swore that I would move Heaven and Earth and/or turn 360s on my grandmother's grave to secure a ticket if the Vikings ever came to town. As it turns out, I may not have to. A friend who has two season tickets has already offered me a ticket to the Minnesota game on October 10th AND the nationally-televised Sunday-night game against the evil, blood-sucking Green Bay $&#^@%$ Packers on November 21st. Now THAT'S a true friend, eh??

The plan, of course, is to wear my Randy Moss jersey and just generally make myself as obnoxious as possible. It ought to be great fun, and I'm already excited. A few years ago, while the Astros were still playing in that concrete mausoleum known as the Astrodome, my friend and I went to an interleague game when the Minnesota Twins came to town. We were the only Twins fans in our section, but we made as much noise as the rest of the section combined. This is no mean feat when you realize that they don't come much more reticent than my friend- a Norwegian citizen, and myself- a Minnesota refugee. Minnesota won the game 2-1, and by the sixth inning, the Astros fans in our section were good-naturedly throwing rolled popcorn bags and hotdog wrappers at us.

The game against the evil, blood-sucking Green Bay $&#^@%$ Packers ought to be fun, albeit for very different reasons. For some sick reason, some members of my family live in Wisconsin and they're (shudder) fans of the evil, blood-sucking Green Bay $&#^@%$ Packers. My father actually flies a Packers flag in his front yard (I feel for the poor, deluded man). Of course, I'll be able to root for the Texans again. After all, I generally pull for Minnesota, Houston, and whoever is playing Dallas or the evil, blood-sucking Green Bay $&#^@%$ Packers.

Let's not get me started on the Dallas $&#^@%$ Cowboys...not today, anyway. I'd rather not going into the burning hatred that I've had for them since 1975. I know; hatred and bitterness are such ugly, unproductive emotions. They've certainly worked well for me, though....

For now, I'm circling October 10th on my calendars...not that I'm counting the days or anything....

How 'bout dem Vikings, eh??
