Can we please talk about something that matters now? Today??

Veterans group criticizes Kerry's Vietnam record

Frankly, I'm growing rather tired of Vietnam being an issue in this Presidential campaign. I fail to understand how something that happened 30+ years ago is going to impact our future for good or ill. And yet some maroons still insist on making it an issue- the latest being a group of veterans attacking Kerry's service record.

Two Houston attorneys were among 18 veterans who traveled to Washington to denounce Kerry, whom they described in harsh, personal terms as vain, aggressive and a "loose cannon."

"Thirty-five years ago, many of us fell silent over the stain of sewage" from Kerry's allegations of war atrocities by U.S. forces in Vietnam, said Navy veteran Alvin "Andy" Horne of Houston. "I don't intend to be silent ever again."

Horne and John O'Neill, the Houston lawyer who debated Kerry about the war on television in the 1970s, have joined about 200 other veterans in signing a letter denouncing Kerry. Among many others asked to sign, 19 have refused, O'Neill said.

The members of Swift Boat Veterans for Truth are angry that Kerry turned to anti-war activism after his service in Vietnam, testifying before Congress about alleged war crimes and throwing away his decorations in protest.

So, Kerry was wrong for speaking his mind. Isn't that a right enshrined in the Bill of Rights? Isn't that what Kerry and others who fought in Vietnam felt they were fighting to defend?

Look, if we're going to compare war records, let's hear from Bush supporters about their man's war record? That's OK, I'll wait....

Nothing yet? Well, given that Bush used his connections to avoid combat service, I'm not so sure what these veterans think Bush has to offer. For some reason, these veterans seem to have a personal vendetta against John Kerry. That is their right. If they are going to criticize someone on their war record, they might want to look at their man. John Kerry requested to serve in Vietnam. George W. Bush used his connections to avoid combat service. So, who's the hero now??
