Today, I'm going to own up to my dirty little secret: the "Friends" finale is on tonight, and I couldn't care less. Oh, I'll watch it, because Susan has been living for this event, and she'll have the television anyway. I'll probably even enjoy it, but if I had a reason to miss it, I'd do it and feel no guilt at all. I know; don't hate me for being fickle. After all, it's just a television show, right? It's not like it's the Stanley Cup Finals or anything REALLY important.
I rarely get excited about television shows. Certainly, I do more than my share of television watching, but I'm a grazer much more than a committed loyalist. Way back when, I was hooked on "Northern Exposure", probably because I always wanted to do Janine Turner. "Twin Peaks" was a whole lot of fun, probably because I'm partial to anything done by David Lynch. I enjoyed "M*A*S*H" for the writing and the anti-war message. Other than that, I tend to watch a lot of sports. Too many shows "jumped the shark" far too long ago to maintain my interest. (e.g.- "ER")
Hey, come on, y'all...it's only a television show (this from the man who cried at the end of the M*A*S*H finale in 1983). Ten years of a show about a group of self-absorbed yuppies is coming to an end. Yes, it was entertaining, and it WAS one of the better shows out there. The good thing is that "Friends" will never really be gone- not as long as there is syndication and DVDs.
Of course, the best thing for me is that after tonight I'll be able to watch more hockey games.... ;0)
