To call this craven political posturing would be to miss the point

Arab summit outrage over abuse

OK, I can understand the outrage over the abuse of Iraqi prisoners, and over the deaths of Palestinians, but aren't we missing something here?

TUNIS, Tunisia (AP) -- Arab leaders meeting Saturday for their annual summit were united in outrage over the prisoner abuse scandal in U.S.-occupied Iraq, according to draft resolutions that also condemned terrorism, reiterated calls for Arab-Israeli peace and put Arab nations on the road to political and economic reform....

High on the agenda were the deteriorating situation in Iraq and the recent escalation of violence in the Palestinian territories, particularly the Gaza Strip, where 40 Palestinians have been killed in the past week in an Israeli offensive in the Rafah refugee camp on the Egyptian border.

Other items include reform of the Arab League and a response to a U.S. proposal for political reform in the Middle East.

Hmm...and not a word about the beheading of Nicholas Berg? Or was that acceptable because of his Jewish surname? Until Arab leaders learn to stop packaging their outrage for their own domestic audiences, they will have no credibility outside of the Arab world, and they will continue to be viewed as the monsters they are. Then again, is anyone really surprised by this transparent domestically-oriented political maneuvering?
