Ad targets Cheney's lesbian daughter: Says she sells out to help dad again

It's been said that a Gay Republican is someone who was born with a greater than normal talent and capacity for self-loathing. After all, how else can you explain working and/or supporting a party that wants to legislate both you and your lifestyle out of existence?

I find it difficult to understand the concept behind the Log Cabin Republicans. I recognize that being gay doesn't automatically qualify one as a flaming Liberal, but Conservatism is hardly conducive to open-minded acceptance of alternative lifestyles.

Mary Cheney is both lesbian and (apparently) Republican. It's not a logical combination to most of us, but it is what it is. The fact that her father happens to be Vice-President should indicate to those on the militant Left that she probably is not going to be a willing poster child for their cause.

WASHINGTON -- A campaign to compel the vice president's lesbian daughter to oppose a proposed ban on gay marriage is launching its first Internet ad on Monday.

A series of simply animated cartoon panels features stick figures of Mary Cheney and Vice President Dick Cheney. One image reads, "Dick's daughter sold out to help Dick run again."

The story line refers to Mary Cheney's job as director of vice presidential operations for the Bush-Cheney re-election campaign.

She held a public role as her father's assistant in the 2000 campaign and helped the GOP recruit homosexual voters during the 2002 midterm elections.

She has been less visible this year while traveling with the vice president or working at campaign headquarters in Arlington, Va.

President Bush, meanwhile, has disturbed many gays, Republicans included, by asking Congress to move on a constitutional amendment that would ban same-sex marriage in the United States.

"They've clearly made the decision to keep her in the closet for this campaign," said John Aravosis, who in February launched the Web-based campaign www.DearMary.com, which started running the ad on Friday.

Of course, where does it say that one's political affiliations outweigh family ties? Some would view Mary Cheney as a "traitor" to "the cause", as if she owes the Gay & Lesbian Movement her undying allegiance. It IS rather odd, granted, but America is a land of contradictions. Simply because Mary Cheney is a lesbian does not mean that she has to be defined by that lifestyle. Perhaps she just loves her father and wants to see him succeed. Is that really such a bad thing?

If Mary Cheney chooses not to be the poster child for the Gay & Lesbian Movement, that is her choice. Yes, she may well be working to support a candidate that will ultimately succeed in legislating to her own detriment. Again, America is a land of contradictions. Such is the nature of free choice. Deal with it.
