Talk about a hardship tour....

KIM IL SUNG UNIVERSITY JOB OFFER

Looking for an adventure? Need a challenge, something to perk up your professional life? Can you deal with adversity, poverty, and a population verging on starvation? If you can answer "yes" to these questions, this job just might be for you:

Conditions in North Korea are harsh and the successful candidate will need a high degree of resilience. The working and living conditions will be difficult and he/she should be prepared for this, e.g in winter the temperature can be as low as –30 degrees and classrooms are usually unheated. However, the postholder’s apartment does have heating.

Of course, you would have to accept having zero freedom, no ability to travel freely, and having to deal with a populace that has been virtually brainwashed by the cult worship of Kim Jong-il. And what is your reward for this tour de combat?

£23,000 per annum; rent-free furnished apartment (bugged); 11% bonus if you can finish the contract without attempting to flee. A car and a driver are also provided, the driver being a member of the security apparatus.

Hey, if nothing else you'd come home with a few stories to tell. Ten years ago, when I was single, I might have jumped at something like this. There is something that fascinates me about repressive, reclusive regimes, especially in our totally-wired, immediate information world. In 1994, I have a layover at the airport in Tirana, Albania, and I remember thinking that even though Albania was free of Communism, it still had a long ways to go.

A few weeks earlier I had been on the Macedonian side of Lake Ohrid. Just a couple short miles away on the other side of the lake was Albania, and the border runs right down the middle of the lake. Just a few short years before, swimming a few hundred yards off shore would have resulted in getting shot by Albanian patrol boats. Yes, things had changed....

A school year in North Korea, though? Well, look at it this way; it's not as if there'd be much for you to spend your salary on.

No, I don't have any food. Go back to sleep... was the previous entry in this blog.

This is where I realize that I may need to be a wee bit more careful about what I write is the next entry in this blog.
