Another DUMB@$$ AWARD wiener

Cheney: Kerry, Edwards too close to trial lawyers

DUMB@$$ AWARD wiener #125: Dick Cheney

You'd think that an experienced politician would realize before criticizing an opponent that the same sort of criticism could well be leveled back at him. Of course, if Dick Cheney were capable of that sort of critical thinking, he wouldn't be our latest DUMB@$$ AWARD wiener, would he?

COLUMBIA, Mo. -- Vice President Dick Cheney criticized the Democratic ticket today, arguing that John Kerry and John Edwards have opposed changes to the medical malpractice insurance system because they are too close to trial lawyers....

"Both Sens. Edwards and Kerry have consistently voted against medical liability reform. They don't want to see reform of that system. I think it's because, frankly, they are too close to the plaintiff's attorneys that benefit from the system and the way it operates today," Cheney said.

Vice presidential candidate Edwards was a trial lawyer who made millions before his election to the Senate in 1998.

You know, being a trial lawyer is not an inherently evil thing, like say, being Vice-President in the Bush Administration. Generally speaking, trial lawyers by themselves are not responsible for what some see as outrageous settlements. Juries make decisions based on something called "evidence". For those of you who may have forgotten, "evidence" is something that is used to demonstrate someone's culpability. Juries assess monetary damages as a way of punishing those guilty of egregious abuses. These damages are based on evidence.

Being a successful attorney does not rise to the level of being an evil, blood-sucking parasite as some would have us think. Besides, if Cheney feels it is appropriate to criticize John Kerry and John Edwards for being "too close" to trial lawyers, what about Bush and Cheney and their cozy relationship with Big Oil? Hmm? Or can someone explain the difference? No? I didn't think so....

Sadly, DUMB@$$ES often shoot from the lip and engage their intellect only after the fact- if they bother to engage their intellect at all. Before going off on Kerry and Edwards, Dick Cheney might want to look at the skeletons in his own closet. If he looks closely, he'll find a DUMB@$$ AWARD- and a richly deserved one at that.
