I've been known to ruminate on the imminent and pervasive decline of Western Civilization. I try to be an optimist, but between Republican disingenuousness and the exponential profileration of dangerously stupid people, it's tough to maintain any measurable degree of optimism. In the final analysis, I'm a realist, and trust me, reality ain't all that pretty these days.
Imagine my surprise, then, when my (already low) expectations are exceeded. I came out of my office yesterday afternoon to find a note under the windshield of my truck. Great, I figured; probably some @$$wipe complaining about my parking. Wrong. The note was from a woman who wrote that she had backed into my rear bumped and gave her cell phone number so I could call her for her insurance information.
I looked at my bumper, and there was indeed a small (VERY small) crease in the chrome on the bumper's face bar. Honestly, though, if the woman had just driven off without leaving her note, I never would have known that anything was amiss. Hey, I drive a '96 Ford F-150 with almost 100,000 miles on it. If I worried about every minor little dent or ding, I'd drive myself nuts. Another ding? It justs adds that much more character....
I called the woman back to thank her for doing the right thing. I told her that I was not concerned about the "damage" and have no plans to puruse repairs. As far as I am concerned, the matter is closed. 'Nuff said....
Thank you, Sarah, whoever your are and wherever you may be. For a little while, at least, I have a bit more faith in humanity. I imagine this will only last until the next time Rick Santorum holds a press conference, though.
