Panem et circenses?

Could there have been anything more pathetic than Max Cleland trying to get to the Bush ranch in Crawford, TX, in his wheelchair? Well, actually, yes, there could have been and indeed there was. The way the Bushies handled the whole thing was beyond pathetic. Instead of inviting Cleland in and handling the entire photo op behind closed doors, they left a triple amputee to face the cameras in the hot Texas sun. What they got as a result was the opportunity to be roasted on the 6pm news for their obvious insensitivity. Nice job, guys....

OK, so it was little more than bad political theater. In the final analysis, will this silly little one-act play succeed in winning over any undecided voters? Somehow I doubt it, but it did make George W. Bush look like the callous, self-righteous Uncompassionate Conservative he has proven himself to be over the past few years. Advantage Kerry.

And how silly was Bush's gesture of sending out an "emissary" with a letter of his own? So, let me see if I've got this straight...Bush is willing to generally disavow the dirty work done for him by Swift Boat Veterans For Truth, but he refuses to address the issue specifically. Yes, it would seem that he wants to have his cake and eat it too, while demanding that Kerry denounce 527 ads. Hypocritical? Clearly, that would seem to be the case.

THIS is leadership, taking the moral high ground? Well, no, actually it's craven political calculation, and Our Sainted President is willing to do whatever it takes to win in November, no matter how sneaky, underhanded, or two-faced it might be. Is this the "leader" we deserve? We CAN do better.

WE DESERVE BETTER.
