Politics does make for strange bedfellows, eh?

Evangelicals Urge Bush To Do More for Sudan

Y'all can safely assume that this is the first time this has happened: me getting behind Evangelicals on ANYTHING. In the case of Darfur, though, these folks have their hearts and minds in the right place, and I have no problems getting behind their efforts to bring relief to people who desperately need it.

Thirty-five evangelical Christian leaders have signed a letter urging President Bush to provide massive humanitarian aid and consider sending U.S. troops to stop what they called the "genocide" taking place in the Darfur region of Sudan.

The Aug. 1 letter marks a shift in focus for the evangelical movement, which previously was interested primarily in halting violence against Christians in southern Sudan. The victims in Darfur, a western province, are mostly Muslim.

Where I part ways with Evangelicals, of course, is that this for me is purely a moral and humanitarian imperative, NOT an opportunity to win converts for Christ. Still, if it gets the Bush Administration off their collective @$$e$ and spurs action on Darfur, it doesn't really matter what my philosophical differences with Evangelicals are, does it?
