Another DUMB@$$ AWARD wiener

Pitcher breaks non-pitching hand in clubhouse

DUMB@$$ AWARD wiener #145: Kevin Brown

He makes something like $15 million a season to play a kid's game every five days, and yet it seems that Kevin Brown displays a level of maturity that most any child would be disciplined for. Perhaps someone could benefit from a time out??

NEW YORK (AP) -- Yankees pitcher Kevin Brown broke his non-throwing hand punching a clubhouse wall in frustration during the New York's 3-1 loss to the Baltimore Orioles on Friday night.

The pitching-weak Yankees, whose AL East lead over second-place Boston was cut to 2½ games, did not immediately know how long the right-hander would be sidelined.

"You just can't do this," general manager Brian Cashman said. "You've got to keep your emotions in check."

Brown (10-4) dropped to 1-3 in his last five starts and 3-8 lifetime against Baltimore. He allowed three runs and five hits in six innings, struck out seven and walked two.

The oft-injured right-hander appeared to tweak his ankle while covering first base on an awkward play that ended the fifth, but he lasted another inning. He punched the wall after the sixth.

Of course, in the permissive environment that is professional sports, Yankees management will cluck nervously and wring their hands over Brown's display of immaturity and idiocy. In the end, though, it is likely nothing will or can be done to discipline Brown. So, while the Yankees' collective collar begins to tighten, it appears that one of their key pieces is losing his poise. If Boston manages to catch the Yankees (after being 10 1/2 games back less than three weeks ago), Kevin Brown's DUMB@$$ AWARD will seem even more appropriate.
