One month before the election, 32% of people surveyed still believed that Saddam Hussein planned the September 11 attacks. The bipartisan 9/11 Commission emphatically stated “it had access to the same information the vice president has seen regarding contacts between Al Qaeda and Iraq prior to the 9/11 attacks.” and that it had not discovered any “collaboration/cooperation between al-Qaeda and Iraq.”
Maybe that 32% is willfully ignorant. Maybe they need that connection to justify more than 1,000 American lives lost and more than $200 billion spent on a dead-end conflict. We doubt the reason matters to Dick Cheney, as long as he can keep the lie alive.
