Ban on gay unions filed: Same-sex marriage bill will be on agenda
Continuing the Texas Legislature’s time-honored tradition of (not exactly) dealing with the pressing issues of the day, now has been deemed the proper time to enshrine discrimination in the state’s Constitution.
AUSTIN - Texans could write a ban on same-sex marriage into the state constitution under legislation filed Monday, the first day for lawmakers to submit bills for the January session….
Gay marriage was a heated issue during last week’s national elections, with 11 states approving constitutional bans on same-sex marriage. At least five other states had previously passed similar constitutional amendments.
Texas already has a law defining marriage as a union between a man and a woman, as well as a law passed in 2003 that prohibits the recognition of same-sex unions.
House Joint Resolution 6 would add a new section to the Texas Constitution that reads: “Marriage in this state shall consist only of the union of one man and one woman.” It would have to be passed by two-thirds of the House and Senate before going to a vote of the people.
“I think it’s very important that we get this issue out of statutes and into the constitution so that there’s no question about how the people stand on this issue of marriage,” said Rep. Warren Chisum, R-Pampa, who introduced the joint resolution.
The education system in this state is disgraceful, environmental protection is a joke, and services for the poor are at an all-time low, and yet legislators have time to make certain that we can legally discriminate against a segment of the population that only wants to be left alone. Hmm…is it any wondering why government in this state is such a joke?
Even with school finance, diminished funding for the Children’s Health Insurance Program, the embattled foster care program, and the inefficient and racially-biased death penalty on the docket, it’s good to know that our Legislature will be keeping us safe from the gays, eh? Well done, y’all….
