It might be funny if there weren't something to this

Republicans Urge Minorities To Get Out And Vote On November 3rd

Minority voters should make their unique voices heard, especially the African-American voting bloc, which is always a major factor in every election. That’s why we put up hundreds of brightly colored banners featuring Martin Luther King Jr. and the ‘Vote November 3’ reminder. We needed to make sure they know when we want them at polling places. You can’t walk through a black neighborhood here in Miami without seeing our ‘Don’t Forget Big Wednesday!’ message up on a billboard, tacked to a phone booth, or taped to a bus shelter. The Republican Party has spared no expense in this endeavor.

Wait! It’s not over yet!! Um, OK, it is?? Damn, and we worked SO hard to get out the minority vote (snicker)….

Of course, this might just explain why we saw so few minority voters in Precinct 333 yesterday. This might actually seem funny, except for the reality that this was essentially the unspoken goal of the Republican Party. No one could ever reasonably accuse the GOP of accommodating minorities- their “Big Tent” really only openly welcomes minorities if they’re wearing a waiter’s uniform and carrying and hors d’oeuvres tray. Now that they’ve won the White House again, the GOP has absolutely no incentive to do anything but continue what they’ve done all along- ignore minorities and their concerns. After all, minorities generally don’t donate large amounts of money to the GOP, so why would the party hierarchy and their country-club mentality feel the need to do anything to accommodate those they view as the servant class?

Republican Party leaders will talk the talk about wanting to reach out to minorities and to Democrats, but the reality is that they know there is absolutely no compelling reason for them to do so. George W. Bush won the first popular vote majority since 1988. Congress is once again firmly in the hands of Republicans. What POSSIBLE incentive does the GOP have for reaching out to those it has vanquished? The answer, of course, is absolutely none. They know that they can spend the next four years ruling as they see fit, and if past can be taken as prelude, that is EXACTLY what they will do. To the victors go the spoils, and Republicans historically have not exactly been gracious in victory.

Four more years of being on the outside looking in. Four more years of the wanton disregard of minorities and their issues. Four more years of government of, by, and for the rich and well-connected. Four more years of Bush the Divider. Four more years of not-particularly-enlightened self-interest.

Congratulations, America. You’ve gotten exactly the quality of leadership that you deserve. I’m saddened that our standards have sunk to such depths.
