Powell Says Iran Is Pursuing Bomb: Evidence Cited of Effort to Adapt Missile

Haven’t we already been down this road before? The Bush Administration warning us about a rogue Middle Eastern regime possessing Weapons of Mass Destruction? A dissident exile group providing massaged, uncorroborated “evidence” of the regime’s perfidy? Yes, we have in fact heard this cry of “WOLF!!” before, and that one was proven to be a complete and total fabrication. Over 1200 dead Americans are the result of this failure, which was based on lies, deceptions, and false intelligence from the beginning. NOW we’re supposed to believe yet another warning coming from this Administration?? Give me a break….

The United States has intelligence that Iran is working to adapt missiles to deliver a nuclear weapon, further evidence that the Islamic republic is determined to acquire a nuclear bomb, Secretary of State Colin L. Powell said Wednesday.

Separately, an Iranian opposition exile group charged in Paris that Iran is enriching uranium at a secret military facility unknown to U.N. weapons inspectors. Iran has denied seeking to build nuclear weapons.

“I have seen some information that would suggest that they have been actively working on delivery systems….You don’t have a weapon until you put it in something that can deliver a weapon,” Powell told reporters traveling with him to Chile for an Asia-Pacific economic summit. “I’m not talking about uranium or fissile material or the warhead; I’m talking about what one does with a warhead.”

Of course, it doesn’t take a Ph.D. to realize that Iran developing nuclear weapons is not exactly out of the realm of possibility. That this warning is now coming from a man who lied to the UN and from a dissident group that conveniently supports the goals of this Administration strains credibility. Given that the Bush Administration has ZERO credibility when it comes to warnings on WMDs, particularly where Colin Powell is involved, I’m surprised that this is even being allowed to take place. Powell allowed himself and his good office to be used by a President who has proved himself of ignoring and manipulating the truth to suppose a desired policy goal. The fact that Powell’s information appears to come from a single, unvetted source hardly inspires confidence. So what is it about this warning that makes it worthy of ignoring this Administration’s previous lies?

Yes, Iran may well be developing WMDs. They may already HAVE them. Pardon me, though, if I don’t jump at this Administration’s warning. The last time I engaged in the willing suspension of disbelief, I supported our Prevaricator-in-Chief as he led us into a senseless war of aggression in Iraq that thus far has killed 1200+ American soldiers. I felt at the time that, based on the “evidence” presented, that it was time to suspend partisanship for the good of the country. Like many well-meaning and thoughtful Democrats, I was taken in by a carefully orchestrated campaign of half-truths, faulty intelligence, and outright lies. Though I had my misgivings, I was willing to give Bush the benefit of the doubt. Well, I can guarantee that I will not be make the same mistake again- not while George W. Bush and his merry band of liars are still occupying the White House.

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice…well, THAT’s not going to happen again….
