A fair comparison?

There are many of my colleagues on the Left who easily and willingly compare George W. Bush to Adolf Hitler. While it is understanding how that might seem an apt comparison, it is merely simplistic and inflammatory. No reasonable person will be able to put Bush in the same class as a man who is responsible for the murder of six million European Jews. George W. Bush is NOT Adolf Hitler. There ARE similarities in both their governing styles and the atmosphere present in the countries they rule. The phrase “Good German” can just as easily be applied to Americans now as it was to WWII-era Germany.

We live in a country in which dissent is both implicitly and actively discouraged. We live in a country where a columnist can feels the need to quit his job after one of his columns was spiked because he had the temerity to criticize our Prevaricator-in-Chief. We live in a country in which a school in Delaware can hassle an eighth-grade student for wearing an anti-Bush T-shirt. Is THIS the America that Bush voters want? Has it finally come to pass that “free speech” ultimately means only speech that the majority agrees with?

A look at the restructuring of Bush’s Cabinet provides an indication of the reality that Bush is more intereted in loyalty than competence. His appointment to head the CIA, Porter Goss, has said publicly that the job of the intelligence community is to support the policies of the Administration- NOT protect this country, mind you, but to SUPPORT the policies of the Administration. It has come to pass that our intelligence community is now thoroughly politicized.

No, George W. Bush is not Adolf Hitler. He is much more subtle, and perhaps even more effective. We should all be very afraid of what is happening. Freedom is not destroyed by sledgehammer blows. It is destroyed gradually, bit by bit, with blows from a rubber mallet- and most Americans don’t even care enough to recognize what is happening to the country they claim to love.
