An opportunity to vote with our wallets

(Via Easy Bake Coven)

Yes, the forces of Darkness and Evil may have triumphed on November 2nd, but that doesn’t mean that the fight ends with that setback. The folks at BuyBlue.org are hard at work figuring out ways in which our purchasing decisions can mirror and support our political beliefs.

Buy Blue’s Mission:

You may have voted blue, but were you aware that every day, you unknowingly help dump millions of dollars into the conservative warchest? Simply by buying products and services from companies which heavily donate to conservatives, we have been defeating our own interests as liberals and progressives on a daily basis.

Buy Blue is a concerted effort to educate the public on making informed buying decisions as a consumer. We identify businesses which support our ideals and spotlight their dedication to progressive politics. In turn, we shine that spotlight on unsupportive businesses in the form of massive boycotts and action alerts.

Currently, we are developing an extensive and interactive website which will soon allow you to find out exactly where your money goes when you make purchases, and participate in a dynamic community which constantly monitors corporate activity. There will be Blue alternatives to offending companies, and by making a decision to buy from these businesses, you are helping stimulate the growth of Blue-friendly economics. We are aiming for complete corporate responsibility.

Our collective buying power WILL make a difference, and we WILL be heard.

It’s an idea whose time has come. If you wouldn’t vote for Conservatives supported by trolls like Rupert Murdoch and his ilk, why in the world would you want to contribute to his bottom line? Boycotts are tired and ultimately futile, but what I think is being proposed here is an actual change in our purchasing habits. It’s not so much that Progressives will refrain from purchasing goods and services that benefit Conservatives, but more that we will make decisions that benefit Progressives and their causes. Some might argue that this is little more than splitting philosophical hairs, and perhaps on some level it is. I look at it as making buying decisions for positive reasons as opposed to punitive ones. In the long run, it is much easier to change your buying behaviors for positive reasons.

There is no greater or more powerful force in American politics than money. For too long now, Progressives have paid little attention to the reality that many of our buying decisions line the pockets of those who would work against our interests. BuyBlue promises to be a force for helping us recognize the power of our dollars and identifying ways to spend those dollars that will not come back to haunt us on Election Day. It is very much an idea whose time has come, and those us in a Blue State of mind should take notice.
