Apparently, smart rich kids can play football

Falcons flying high after knocking off Katy in 2 OTs to reach semis

Yes, ‘tis the season when high school footbal in Texas winds up to a fever pitch. The state playoffs are winding down, and all folks in the towns that are still playing really want is a state championship. Nowhere is that more true this year than…Clear Lake?

Yep, Clear Lake High School, normally known only for spoiled rich kinds and driven overachievers, beat perennial power Katy 35-34 in two overtimes at Rice Stadium yesterday. For the first time in school history, they’ve made it to the state semifinals. Congratulations are certainly in order.

Of course, on an even more impressive note, Eric and his debate partner won a tournament at the University of Texas in Austin last night. They finished first out of 126 teams. Congratulations are DEFINITELY in order. Sadly, you’ll never see this in the Houston Chronicle, nor will anyone at CLHS take notice. It’s sad, because Eric and his partner have every reason to be every bit as proud as the members of the CLHS football team.

Of course, I’m hardly objective, but I’m prouder of Eric for his accomplishment, because I know what he’s had to endure to succeed. Congratulations, Eric. I’m proud of you for hanging in there. You deserve this.
