What's so funny about peace, love, and understanding?

Cuba erects billboard attacking U.S.: Retaliation for U.S. diplomatic mission’s Christmas display

On the other hand, the Cuban government does not allow a single word of dissent in its media, jails those who dare espouse different ideas and has not allowed (anyone) to visit Cuban political prisoners since the late 1980s.

Ah, ‘tis the season for peace, love, brotherhood…and pissing contests? Welcome to the latest silly chapter in US-Cuba relations, where symbolism is reality, and each side is so entrenched in their tired, careworm rhetoric that no one outside of South Florida cares much anymore.

Both sides ought to be ashamed of themselves. All they’ve done is reveal themselves to be childish and immature. Diplomacy is supposed to rise above emotion to deal with the facts and realities of political relationships. Apparently, Cuba and the US get their diplomats at the same Toys ‘R’ Us location.

So, instead of finding ways in which the two countries can patch up their differences, we’re treated to the diplomatic equivalent of a pissing contest? Whatever happen to respecting differences? Trying to resolve disputes? Searching for common ground? Well, it IS easier to simply throw mud at one another, eh?

HAVANA, Cuba (AP) — Cuba retaliated for the U.S. diplomatic mission’s Christmas display supporting Cuban dissidents by putting up a billboard Friday emblazoned with photographs of American soldiers abusing Iraqi prisoners and a huge swastika overlaid with a “Made in the U.S.A.” stamp.

The billboard, erected overnight facing the U.S. Interest Section’s offices, stands on the Malecon, Havana’s famed coastal highway.

A diplomat at the mission noted the abuse of prisoners at Iraq’s Abu Ghraib prison had been widely reported and discussed openly and said those responsible were being prosecuted.

Before anyone from the Bush Administration begins feeling the need to sow their self-righteous oats by criticizing Cuba for it’s human rights record, might I suggest a look in the mirror? Perhaps it’s time for these maroons to admit that no one is going to confuse George W. Bush for Mother Teresa. Before you charge forward lobbing brickbats at Cuba, you might want to look at cleaning out your own closet first. Then again, hypocrisy IS the universal Republican value….
