Radio show staff suspended for playing tsunami parody song
Sure, it was tasteless, insensitive, and horribly disrespectful, but it DID have a nice beat, and you COULD dance to it….
It’s not often that I am rendered speechless and dumbfounded, but in this case I was so taken aback by the sheer insensitivity, ignorance, and lack of compassion for the death and suffering of so many that I could barely respond. It is difficult to imagine how anyone could be so stunningly ignorant and arrogant as to think that this crap could possibly be mistaken for entertainment.
Owners of a New York hip-hop radio station suspended its morning host for playing a song mocking victims of the Indian Ocean tsunami.
Emmis Radio pulled the “Miss Jones Morning Show” off WQHT-FM after Tasha Nicole Jones played “The Tsunami Song” several times, a “We Are the World” parody with a crude racial term for Asians that mocks tsunami victims’ suffering, the New York Daily News reported Thursday.
Emmis Radio President Rick Cummings called it “morally and socially indefensible. All involved, myself included, are ashamed and deeply sorry.”
He has indefinitely suspended Jones and her crew, a move that members of the Asian-American community denounced as a virtual slap on the wrist.
“The people responsible need to be taken off the air permanently,” said City Councilman John Liu, a Democrat from Queens. “And the company should face financial sanctions, so no one can profit from this kind of ugliness.”
Better yet, how about they spend some time in a remote village in Indonesia, Thailand, or Sri Lanka, living the life of a survivor? Let’s see how they do with no safe drinking water, little food, few habitable buildings, and no remaining livelihood. I wonder if Ms.. DUMB@$$ would find that so mightily amusing and entertaining?
